What was I thinking?
For almost twelve months, I went without a haircut or colour. That’s right—a whole year. A personal challenge, a test of endurance, or maybe just a momentary lapse in judgement. At first, it didn’t feel that hard. But oh boy… things changed.
I’ve always known the magic of a fresh haircut. That post-salon bounce, that little spark of confidence when your hair swishes just right. What I didn’t understand was just how blah ordinary hair can make you feel.
I'd catch my reflection and barely recognise myself. That version of me in the mirror? We were no longer friends. It wasn’t just the dullness or the lack of shape—it was the way it made me feel. Dull hair, it turns out, dulls your whole vibe.
In an effort to reclaim my sparkle, I stocked up like I was opening my own mini salon.
✨ Sparkly new hot rollers
✨ A rose gold straightener
✨ Enough product to moisturise the moon
But no matter what I did, it wasn’t working. Because underneath all the tools and tricks was hair that had lost its shape, its colour, its soul. There was no foundation, no friendship to be had.
After 10.5 months of determined denial, I gave in. Just a little trim, I told Leonard. He was kind. Encouraging, even. And the new shape? Lovely—for about a week. Then it was back to “Plain Jodie” in the mirror, staring back with unimpressed eyes.
And then… the big cut.
Leonard channelled his inner Edward Scissorhands—texturing, shaping, transforming—and created what I now call the most enjoyable haircut of my life. The difference was instant. I felt like me again.
And here’s what I learned: bad hair doesn’t just look tired. It makes you feel tired. Uninspired. Off.
So if you’ve been putting it off, telling yourself you’re “fine”... maybe it’s time. Let 2026 be the year you claim yourself back. A little cut, a little colour, a lot of you.
Your chair is ready at Desmond & Molly Jones.
Come feel the difference. You’ll wonder what you were thinking too.
