“When you come out of the theatre talking about it — that’s how we wanted it to feel.”
— Julia Roberts on her movie After the Hunt
That quote stuck with me. It’s such a simple thought, but a good one: how often do we really talk about what we’ve just experienced? Not what’s next week, not what we plan to do, but what we just did.
I’ll be honest — I don’t do this often enough. I’m one of those people who can talk for hours about what I want to do. Future holidays, big plans, the next project… I can get so caught up in the “what’s next” that I forget to take a minute to look back and smile at what’s already been done.
Just the other day, Leonard and I got talking about swimming — pool vs. surf. (If you’ve ever had that debate, you know how deep it can go - haha!). Chlorine or salt? Laps or waves? That conversation spiralled into a trip down memory lane, revisiting all the sports I’ve done over the years. Some I hadn’t thought about in decades!
It was like opening a dusty old photo album in my head — there I was hiking, surfing, swimming, and probably tripping over something athletic in the process. My adult son actually laughed when I told him I’d been hiking for the day. He thought he’d called the wrong number!
Apparently, I’m more “Netflix and couch” in his eyes than “boots and backpack.” I guess I’ll have to let the grandchildren know about my past adventures — my kids will never believe me. But that’s the beauty of reflection — it reconnects you with the parts of yourself you’d forgotten and makes today feel that little bit richer.
So here’s to today. To talking about it, living it and enjoying it before we rush ahead. And speaking of good stories — pop into Desmond & Molly Jones. We’ll take care of your hair, top up your confidence and listen to your latest tale (or two!). Whether you’ve been hiking, surfing or just surviving another busy week, we’re here to make you look and feel your best — one great conversation at a time.
